We went to the Deli for the Sunday Jazz Brunch. I can't conclusively decide if I liked it or not. The IDEA of it, I loved. But honestly, the band was missing something critical... enthusiasm. There was one other person there-- an older gentleman, eating alone, trying to converse with the players in between songs etc. When they were done playing a song I recognized and enjoyed somewhat slightly, because of that recognition, I commented I was sorry it was over so soon. The three awkwardly followed up with they were sorry it wasn't over yet. WOW. On the brunch menu, there is a choice of an egg and sausage sandwich on a homemade bagel ($6), an array of frittatas including: egg whites, mozzarella and roasted veggies, smoked salmon asparagus and cream cheese, mushrooms and cheddar and bacon, tomatoes and cheddar ($8). They also had blueberry cream cheese stuffed french toast. I chose the bacon, tomatoes and cheddar and added mushrooms. It wasn't as good as I anticipated. They do make them to order, but it was quite flat, extremely greasy and the bacon wasn't of the highest quality. It was thin, stringy and flavorless. I was expecting small cubes of a thicker quality bacon. My boyfriend ordered the Morning Star which came with two eggs, under béchamel sauce. The eggs were overtop of cubed slightly boiled potatoes which were then cooked with onions and green peppers. His was the better of the two. But, I'm not sure if I liked it because he got it, or because it was really good. The Deli is asthetically pleasing if you sit near the window and its raining or snowing, like it was today. But, something about the atmosphere is a bit off. The food wasn't good enough to go back for alone, but it wasn't terrible. The waitress was talking with the older gentleman about how empty its been over the past few weeks. A couple small improvements and I think they will be in good shape to get more repeat customers. What I did not find appetizing was the stench of stale beer that leaked up from the Saloon (basement bar) as I was leaving.

She says: We used to love hanging out at the Deli, especially for half-priced drinks during happy hour -- but after tonight, we may never go back again. Our experience was laughably, pathetically bad. Here is how the story goes: * We walked in behind a 20-person group (for real). There is a gentleman nearby just standing. We get out of the way, figuring that this preoccupied-looking man was simply part of this group -- this person happened to be the manager of the store. He was absolutely unapproachable and did not even bid any of his customers a greeting. * We had an ever-growing group, where friends would drop by and join us at the booth. Despite the fact that people had to stand next to our booth to hang out, and there were open tables and free chairs, the servers referred our guests to an hourlong waitlist instead of helping to find them extra seating. * Our waitress practically disappeared for a while, leaving people drink and food-less -- don't get us wrong; the waitress was perfectly sweet, and we liked working with her -- but we felt bad watching our guests wait ... then wait some more ... to make simple orders. Also every time we would ask about seating, or payment, or something unrelated to food, she would say "I need to go ask the manager" -- and the answer would inevitably be, "Sorry, but we can't seat / help you." * The food was terribly mediocre / not worth the money. He got a chicken pasta in vodka sauce. I'm sure he'll say more about that, but it was less than impressive. I got a seared tuna salad with wasabi dressing. The tuna was over-cooked and not very appetizing, and worse, the dressing came as a citrusy vinaigrette that had separated (a two-layer ordeal of unknown citrus substance on bottom, a thick layer of separated oil on top) -- not very appetizing or tasty, with no hint of wasabi whatsoever. I had to resort to getting soy sauce to season the salad instead. * We finally moved over to the bar once the clock struck the happy hour time. We had been told by our waitress that everything was half off, and we were expecting this given our prior experience with the Deli. Needless to say, we were shocked when a friend's Chimay (beer) was not discounted, and neither was a liquor we had tried. The bar waiter explained that the happy hour rules had changed, and only certain drinks were now discounted. A couple of things are wrong with this picture: 1. Why did the waitress mislead us? 2. Why doesn't the Deli have this new happy hour policy written down somewhere clearly so that the guests would know what's discounted? We were already having a poor enough experience at the Deli, but our entire table definitely ruled out any future visits at this point. * Oh yes, it gets worse. The mezcal (smoky tequila-like liquor) that we had ordered had little brown specks in it -- but both of us had assumed that they were specks of wood or something like that. But no -- when looked closely, they happened to be TWO DEAD BUGS. And no, the bugs were not part of the drink. * By the way, the door to the ladies room had a lock that was broken - in fact, the door wouldn't close at all because the latch was missing. So ... The Deli, we had a nice run. We loved you, but we'll find another bar, where the guests are treated with proper seating arrangements, the wait staff is treated with more dignity than a broken-record "I have to ask the manager" and is also properly informed about the happy hour discounts, the menu is clear about things that are discounted or not, and our drink doesn't have bugs in them. Laughably bad. Just, laughably bad. He says: Wow. Just wow. We chose The Deli as our hang out spot for an engagement celebration because we had some really great times over the last couple of years. We left basically assured we wouldn't come back. I don't know if ownership changed or what, but I mean... the manager on duty was horrible. I'm talking to you, Saturday night manager in the blue shirt, and I hope your boss is reading this. Here are some managerial tips that could save customers, hopefully at your next job (because we won't be back so long as you're on duty). List of manager's tips: 1. If your hostess is seating a party of 20, don't just stand near the host-stand for minutes doing nothing. 2. If we arrive asking for a bigger table and we take a smaller table until the rest of our party arrives, CONSIDER THAT A RESERVATION. Don't make us make a separate reservation an hour later, with an hour wait, while meanwhile there have been tables open right next to us. 3. If your server quotes the happy hour specials wrong, you have to honor it. It's your job to make sure your servers know these things, and your responsibility to clean it up if they mess up. 4. If your customers gets a drink with TWO FLIES, they are owed an apology by the manager. You should probably also do more than just comp the drink. Free 1/2 drink with flies! Awesome! Plus the food was always so-so.

Let's face it, after you hit 21 in SC you'll find one bar, camp out at it, and defend its awesomeness to your dying breath. It's just the way State College is. Zeno's vs Skeller, Pickles vs G-Man, Saloon vs Phyrst, whatever fits your niche. The Deli is the perfect example of "Me Too!" if there ever was one. In the past, it was a ok bar with ok specials and it was just ok. Okay? However, within the past year or so, The Deli has been trying to push its way into Zeno's Great Wall of 80 Beers by throwing in a truckload of taps of obscure things that your average hipster has not had, assuming they can put down the PBR long enough. Sadly, a massive amount of taps a beer bar does not make. There's the distinct feeling that they just threw them all in to just say they had that many. And let's be honest, what kind of self-respecting beer bar keeps Miller and Coors on tap, let alone on special? Most of the mixed drinks are just renamed from other Dante's locations anyway (Z-Bar Zen = Monkey Boy = Fishbowl). The food is similarly meh, I usually ended up finishing my friend's plates because they just couldn't do it. Besides, all the hipsters know they can already go to Zeno's and get PBR on tap for $2. Why try to fight it?

Food is pretty good. Beer selection is the best part! Great beer bar in State College. This overtook Zeno's as my favorite bar, they have most of the selection and you can actually move around without bumping into 10 people. Zeno's is just too small and the bouncers are d-bags typically. Looking for a good night, start at The Deli!

I have been to the Deli several times. It's a great place to take your parents when they visit. The service is always great, even when it's busy, and I have had outstanding meals every time. I would recommend the potato soup as an app and any of the salads are great. I would also recommend the Z bar zen drink, very refreshing. I am very sad that I graduated and will only be able to eat here when I visit for games!

Food wise, I'd give normal service 4.5 stars & Sunday brunch 5 stars. Beware of the alcohol policy. They won't serve alcohol to any person seated in the company of a minor if that person isn't over the age of 25. Prices are okay, and they have a big menu. Everyone should be able to find something they like. For brunch, you have to try the salmon & asparagus frittata & come between 12 & 2 for live jazz.

For $10 the salads should be huge. I've been here twice and I won't be back. The servers are so so and the food portions are not worth the money.

I was extremely happy after my first visit to this place. We had fried artichoke hearts and clams for appetizers. A few rounds of white and red wine and all kinds of main courses. We sat in the huge atrium kinda section - with the sun room kind of experience. My uncle from NY had pastrami and he was impressed - which is saying a lot. I had the pulled pork sandwich with was okay (is better @ Famous Dave's). The others had burgers, pasta, etc and they all loved it... So a place to visit when in College State, PA.

This has been my experience at The Deli the 10 or so times I've been: Me: "I'd like to order this." Waitress: "No problem." 15 minutes later... Waitress: "The kitchen just told me we're out of ____ (insert common menu item here, like soup, or tomatoes, or once, I kid you not, avocados)." If the kitchen ever actually communicated when they ran out of menu items to the servers, lunch would not take 2 hrs. Also, while the beer menu is excellent, their bartender can't mix a drink to save his/her life. For example, I ordered a mint julep once and it was so bad none of the 4 alcohol oriented people at my table would touch it after they tasted it.

This is for 3-1/2 stars. I've been to the Deli quite a few more times since writing my original review. In so having done, I'd like to edit this to say that the service there over the last year has really taken a turn for the worse. It's extremely inefficient, especially at the door when one must occasionally wait for a table. It appears that poor management may be partially to blame for this problem.

Out of all the spots in State College to get your drink on, The Deli is actually my favorite spot. Gone is the raging college crowd that you'd find at Gingerbread Man. No drunk sorority girls, nor angry frat guys looking to get smashed. The Deli is a chill spot, that has an amazing selection of beer and a decent food selection as well. As far as the food here, the buffalo chicken cheesesteak sandwich is a winner. The bread comes nicely toasted and the chicken has that nice kick to it. Service here is pretty good, and I've actually never had to wait for a table or a seat at the bar. If you want to come and get your drink on, you have go to come here during happy hour. Things are half off here, which means getting drunk for free will be either 2x as fun, or half as expensive. Now, as far as the bar list is concerned, this is the best you'll find in State College. From domestics to your obscure imports, The Deli has it all. What makes this my absolute favorite drinking spot in State College, is the fact that they have Hitachino White Ale on tap!!!! You hear that?!? Hitachino Nest White Ale on tap! This thing is hard enough to find on tap in California and New York, so just even having this on tap in such an obscure location make me giddy. Now, this is probably the most expensive beer they have on tap, $8, so not that many people order it, but it will be my mission to finish all the 3 kegs that they have and then steal the bar tap for my own collection! The Deli. Solid food and AMAZING beer selection. No obnoxious crowd, drunken girls spilling beer. Just good old food and drinking going on here.

Can you believe I hadn't eaten here since middle school? I'm possibly the worst Penn Stater ever (oh yeah, haven't been to a football game since I was 3, but that's beside the point...) Though I remain skeptical of Italians running a Jewish-Deli-themed restaurant, this place is not that bad. The menu is seriously overwhelming, so the first time I played it safe and just went with the BLT+Egg+Basil Aioli. It was pretty good! I wish it wasn't served on focaccia, because it got a little soggy and messy. The second time I got the French Onion Soup which I loved, and the Apple Bacon Cheddar sandwich, which I didn't love. Also, the sweet potato fries are straight up addictive. Though it's not a favorite food pick, the beer selection is pretty nice and locally focused, and it isn't quite as bro-ish as most of the other bars in town (by State College standards). Good to start out a night or catch up with a friend over beers and a bite to eat.

Meh, this place was ok. We came in with a super large group, so the service was slow, but I can't really blame them for that. Great selection of beers, and I really liked the PA one that I tried. I had an Ahi salad, which was pretty good, but really nothing so special.

So far I am not able to comment. My friends have eaten their meals and my simple medium well hamburger is in the oven for the third time. The manager Bethany was super professional in handling the situation personally and table side. The burger has since arrived and the alcohol is helping immensely ---what was I talking about !???? Drinks and service excellent --food adequate given the collegiate environment. Wait at the last moment they comped my meal and thus I am increasing, based on taste and cost alone, to 5*****

I met my sister here -- me from Pittsburgh, her from Bethlehem. There were 6 in our group. 3 of the orders were sent incorrectly. 1 order, the pasta and shrimp was So hot, it was inedible. Drinks were never refilled. The restaurant was not crowded. This is the 1st time in 20 years that I have not tipped 20%. I will never go back

Ah the Deli. Hands down the best family bar and restaurant in State College. Their chefs do a pretty good job whipping together meals, however, nothing that will blow your socks off. Seating is adequate on the inside, and there is a dark feel to this place. Service is acceptable and prices run average.

Brunched at The Deli quite some time ago. Obviously their food didn't leave an indelible impression on me, though I recall everything was fine. I like their naturally-lit dining room (where I usually am seated), and (trivia time!) this is one of the first places I remember seeing automated towel dispensers. Seriously. A few weeks ago I returned here for drinks. Like before, it was a bit crowded, and service wasn't anything to complain about. I asked for a random shot, and ended up with a truly random, truly expensive shot of tequila... or was it whiskey? At least cover was cheap.

Comfy, cozy, average. Though they serve plenty of deli items - pastrami, matzah ball soup, etc. - I still wouldn't exactly consider it a deli. They have too much other stuff to be strictly a deli - fried calamari, quesadillas, falafel, burgers, lots of soups & salads, crab cakes... the list goes on. This place is standard American fare. We had great service, though I'm told that's fairly unusual. The whole front of the restaurant was open, but we were seated in the sunny back room... with two long tables of families, including one of kids under the age of 11, about 20 people in total. They were better-behaved than expected, but it was pretty loud, & I had to wonder why they'd sit us back there with them instead of putting us. The food was good. They had a special soup menu while we were in town, so one of my friends ordered a trio of soups in very small cowls, sort of like a tasting, & asked for an empty bread bowl on the side. Sort of a ridiculous request, but the server was good-natured about it, which we appreciated! I ordered the grilled cheese with cheddar, green apple, & bacon, & while it was tasty, it was a lot heavier than expected - double-decker, greasy, the mounds of cheese already congealing. I ate half & took the rest home but ended up throwing it away. My other friends got the tortilla soup & a salad, both of which he loved. Overall, I don't have anything necessarily bad to say about The Deli, but I'm in no rush to return on my next visit to State College, either. I suspect you can find better food & ambiance elsewhere.

I was slightly pessimistic due to the low ratings on yelp. But! I was actually happy with my experience there. It took about 40 minutes for the two of us to sit down and another 30 minutes for the food to come. But the food and atmosphere in the back room of The Deli made up for it - there was a bass and trumpet duo who were pretty awesome. In comfy lounge chairs, I ordered the cuban sandwich while the boy had the chicken sandwich. Home made chips and a pickle came with each of our sandwiches, and the pickles were crispy and tasty. The chips were less crunchy thought. The cuban is full of meat and the pickle inside gave it a good kick! I had some of the cold slaw that came with the boy's sandwich and it was really good too!

I really want to give this place a higher rating, but I always always leave the place wishing it was better. The good: Second to Zeno's, the Deli has the best beer selection in State College. They care about beer, and the "Meet the Brewer" events they host can be pretty fun. They also make their food fresh daily, and they talk about the changes they are making at their business for the environment - all things I think are awesome. The bad: The food just isn't prepared very well. The menu sounds great, and all the ingredients are there, they just always seem to miss the mark. It became clear to me recently after ordering salmon salads two days in a row. The first day I had one at Champs and the second day I had one at the Deli. The salad at the Deli was watery and gross. I didn't order the wrong thing, I ordered it from the wrong place. The staff has a lot of attitude. Go for the beer, not for the food.

Came here for lunch around 1pm so we could miss the heavy lunch rush. I am guessing that they had just sent a bunch of people on break because it took over 15 minutes before anyone came to take our drink order. We only got service after I went and spoke with the hostess. When we did get our food the fries were soggy, and my hot chicken sandwich tasted like someone had left the chicken in the oven too long, then tried to make up for the lack of taste by pouring a cup of salt on it. The only reason this place is getting 2 stars instead of 1 is that the waiter (once he appeared) was nice and one of the salads ordered was tasty. Over all, I would suggest skipping this place and heading to the Corner Room instead.

We are lifelong State College residents and years ago we used to really like The Deli. However, we had a couple of bad experiences with the food there a few years ago and had not been back since. So when a couple of friends invited us to meet them there for dinner, we decided to give it another try. Our first disappointment came when they didn't have either of the diet bottled sodas listed on the menu (black cherry or cream soda). But the biggest disappointment was the main course the my wife and I both ordered. Now we both love mushrooms, so neither one of us could pass up the wild mushroom ravioli on the menu...it sounded so good in the description! But when it came out is was so poorly prepared that it was terrible! We each received one big bunch of ravioli that was stuck together in a massive clump and was not cooked in the middle, so the entire center was a mushy mess of uncooked pasta and filling. It was obvious that it had not been separated at all during the cooking process so that it could cook properly. To make it even worse, the mushroom wine sauce on top of the ravioli tasted burnt. What a disappointment! Maybe our mistake was that we strayed from the standard "deli" fare on the menu. Our friends ordered a burger and a cheesesteak, and they both really liked their food. And I will say that our salads and desserts were both really good too, which is the reason I'm giving a 2-star review instead of just 1. But unfortunately, the poorly prepared entrées may be enough to keep us from returning to give The Deli another chance. =(

The Deli is a staple in State College and has been around for decades. I would consider it one of the nicer restaurants downtown. I had a Greek salad ($10) and a side of fries ($4). Although it was on the menu, they said the veggie burger, which I originally ordered was no longer being carried, which left zero sandwich options for a vegetarian. The food was decent. I felt like I may have overpaid a bit, but it is what it is.

Our water contained a high level of particulate. It's possible they expected us to decant the water into another receptacle, but none was provided. The salad festival, which we participated in, features an array of mediocre salads that take 45 minutes to arrive. The checks were separate, but the misery was shared by all.

I'm surprised to see all the negative reviews, as we had a great experience here. We stopped in for lunch on a road trip heading west on the recommendation of my cousins who went to Penn State. -We had our 10 month with us, which always complicates restaurant eating somewhat. No matter - we were immediately sat outside on the patio, where there was plenty of room for his high chair and the stroller. The menu is large and the food was good - I had the Cobb Salad and my husband had the mac and cheese (his only complaint was that the portion was a little small). The beer selection is excellent, including some local brews and our waiter Titus was kind enough to allow me to sample a couple before choosing so I could get one I really liked. Again, lots of comments here about the service, but Titus was great - very accomodating to our son and checked in frequentlyy to see what we needed for him. He even asked how long we were in town and made some suggestions for quick stops we should check out. Overall a very good experience!

This used to be one of my favorite restaurants, but they've changed their menu, or chef, or something. It seems that they're trying to be slightly more upscale now. I don't see why, since they were great before, but fine. The problem is that the quality has gone downhill. Example. I order the same thing (almost) every time: hot chicken sandwich and gravy, which comes with mashed potatoes and corn. It's a perfect dish on a cold night and used to be wonderfully flavorful with delicious brown gravy and smooth luscious potatoes. They have killed that dish. Last time I went it was still on the menu, but it came with pale, congealed gravy and lumpy unseasoned potatoes. I have no reason to return now. A shame. I will miss The Deli.

Went on a slow Tuesday night after a long drive to state college. Restaurant wasn't very busy. Took a while for our waitress to come over to. our table and then even longer for our drinks to come. She completely forgot the appetizer we ordered, it just never came. Took a half hour wait for just a hamburger and steak sandwich. My burger was very small, the side salad it came with was tiny. Son's steak sandwich barely had any meat on it. Needless to say we left hungry after spending way too much time there. Waitress never even noticed she completely forgot the appetizer. Won't be back

I've eaten here twice and I would have to say the menu isn't that great. While they have a diverse menu, most of the food is just OK. I however come here fairly often for Happy Hour & its great!! They're under the same umbrella as Inferno so Happy hour starts @ 9p-11pm. The DO have homemade desserts that are really yummy. The peanut butter mousse pie had a chocolate crust with a light/creamy mousse which was so delish, I almost liked the plate clean. There is a cover charge at night which sucks but thank goodness for my friend who bartends so I can get in without paying it.

We go to the deli every year when we spend summers in State College. And every year it gets worse. I decided to write a review this time because of the awful way we were treated. We walked in at noon with a party if 8. Our waiter was pleasant, but took a while to get our drinks out to us. After we ordered.....we waited.....and waited..,,and then waited some more. We asked several times what the issue was and were told that the kitchen was behind. Our waiter was apologetic, but it wasn't his fault. After the food came out, the pastrami was fatty and the chili was so bad that it had to be sent back (we are talking dog food status). When the manager finally came out to speak with us about the wait, she said "according to her kitchen ticket....it was 32 minutes." To which we replied...."we came in at noon and it is now 1:20.....maybe you should check your timer." The manager was very rude. She offered to take some money off the bill and tried to backtrack out of her rude comment....but the damage was done. The food was bad, the service was slow, and the wait time for food was UNREAL. I think our summer tradition of going to the deli is done.

3.5 Stars. Don't let the name "The Deli" fool you. It doesn't do it justice because it's actually a fairly large restaurant with a full-service bar. We stopped by for dinner on a Friday evening and, surprisingly, got a table right away. I didn't anticipate that happening, but happily accepted. Once again, expect more than just sandwiches as the menu has a nice variety of dining options. I decided on the sizzling chicken fajitas and we shared Three Chips & Three Dips (salsa, guacamole, con queso) for an appetizer. By the end, we handed the waiter empty plates, so obviously everything was very good. In a college town you never know what you're going to get when it comes to service, but the young waiter was a "tell it like it is" kind of guy, but professional, personable and entertaining. Regarding the bar (which is individually known as the "Z Bar"), there are over 50 beers on tap, currently featuring about 15 Troegs options. If you somehow can't find a draft option you like, you're crazy...I mean, they also offer about 150 different bottles. I tried the locally made Otto's Oktoberfest, which wasn't spectacular. With many other seasonal brews available, I'm sure there's something better.

I went here a week or two ago and I've got to say that the kitchen was lucky that our party of 10 didn't all order from the salad menu they were presenting! Thankfully I ordered the Pulled Pork sandwich which didn't need lettuce (tasty, hit the spot, but I've had FAR better in the South where everything is better), otherwise I would have been paying for a very skilled salad masquerade. Of the 6 people who ordered a salad or sandwiches that come with lettuce, all of them complained of the salad looking bigger than it was. On top of that we all had to wait an exceptionally long time before we got our meals (mind you, the majority of the meals were SALADS!), we started joking that someone had to make a run to Giant to pick up more lettuce! If only they had...

I brought the boys here over Thanksgiving break to catch a hockey game. The restaurant was pretty deserted but the wait staff was pleasant and the food was good. The Reuben as always was tasty and the boys liked their burgers. I first went here about 24 years ago during orientation and always enjoy going back.

Mixed review. Positives: 1.) Appreciate the "tech" employed by the hostess. Instead of carrying one of those buzzers waiting for a table, their automated system now sends you a text message when your table is ready. This keeps the wait area empty and allows you to stay outside or do some nearby shopping if you so desire. 2.) I had the Deli Meshugna (awesome play on a Jewish favorite) -- grilled corned beef, cole slaw & Russian dressing (which I ordered on the side), all served between two giant potato latkes/pancakes. Pickle on the side. It was phenomenal. Potato pancakes were cooked perfectly, cole slaw was GREAT and not overpowering, and it was definitely a first cut of corned beef that was grilled nicely and very lean. My wife had a chicken Caesar wrap which she said was really good. It was served with couscous, which I thought was odd (but I like couscous). Unfortunately, it was served cold and loaded with onions/peppers which overwhelmed it. I can't see many people wanting to eat that. The Bad: 1.) I had a matzoh ball soup to start. AWFUL. That one year my grandmother tried to pass off 6 jars of Manischewitz as her own was better. The maztoh ball was tasteless, and the chicken broth was bizarre, with a very dark color and bland flavor. Seriously, if you can't make this classic with any sense of love, don't insult the people who can. 2.) It was REALLY warm and humid last night. A lot of people ordering drinks and chaos between the dining area and Z-bar. Younger staff clearly not trained for a busy night, not in communication. First mistake was running out of ice, causing the BAR TENDER to run down to the basement and haul up 50 lbs of ice by herself while more capable/available staff was standing around. Luke warm water was being served in the dining area for a good 15 minutes w/ no ice (yuck) before a few of us made note that the bar tender had long since returned with a refill. The Ugly: Our waiter was serving drinks to another table, holding his tray in an awkward position I could only describe as "untrained" having worked in the industry many years ago. Another waiter was in front of him, back turned, and it was like I knew what was going to happen in slo-mo. He took a step backward, causing our waiter to lose his balance, shattering a wine glass all over the floor and my wife. Again, it's clearly a poor training issue, when a young waiter stands there and doesn't know what to do. He got my wife a couple napkins and that WAS IT!!! Sure white wine will wash out, but he didn't offer to pay for cleaning, a drink/dessert on the house, a reduction of the check...NOTHING.

The Deli is one of the best restaurants in downtown State College, but not the best I've ever been to in my life. They have a nice atmosphere if you sit in the back, but the food isn't always that great. They have a few items that are really good, but their sandwiches and salads can be lackluster sometimes. The soup is pretty good. The specials are always imaginative, which is great. It's a pretty good restaurant. I go there with my boyfriend and my friends and we always have a nice time.

I feel that I like the idea of The Deli more than I actually like The Deli. The food seems like it is going to be amazing when you read it on the menu, and sometimes it is good, but most times it's just ok. The prices are cheap, so that's good, because you honestly are getting what you pay for. They really only have sandwiches and burgers, but there are a few dishes too. On the positive, I have always liked their soups and salads. Also, they always have seasonal beers on tap that have been consistently good, and the wait staff is very knowledgeable about these beers. The bar is very nice, and the back room has gorgeous decor. Overall, I never really go out of my way to come here, I usually come whenever someone else really wants to go.

The Deli is a fantastic place to drink. They have a huge selection of microbrews that is ever rotating. I am almost certain every drinker in State College knows about their amazing happy hour. But for all you out of towners, sit down and prepare yourself. Happy hour is from 9-11pm every night and it's 1/2 off everything. I mean everything from Stoli to Macallan 18 and every single delicious thing in between -- even Johnny Walker Blue Label! These sort of freaky specials almost make me wish I was living in this town again. I think I just got a chubby.

Well, as my fiancé noted, it's our own fault. We came to a place called The Deli and we didn't order sandwiches. (And in The Deli's defense, I've heard the sandwiches are quite tasty.) We ordered appetizers to share. The best I can say is a couple were near, not total, misses. The calamari was totally bland, not what I would expect from a restaurant co-branded with Mario's. It needed lemon, or garlic. Sauce was boring. They forgot the cinnamon salt topping on the sweet potato fries, so they were bland as well. I didn't care for the crab dip, but fiancé liked it. The Mediterranean sampler? You guessed it- bland. I realize we're in central PA and my expectations should probably be adjusted accordingly. But this was basically several different consistencies of slightly garlicky water. On the upside, 90's alternative on the speakers. No complaints there.

I was here lots of time as a student, both for meals and for drinks. The food is some of the most reliable in State College. They have a very extensive menu. Lunch is particularly good here. Sandwiches and soups are great, especially the baked potato soup. Brings back such good memories! As night, the bar area becomes "Z Bar." It never seems to get too crowded on weekend nights, and the booths are great for large groups of friends out on the town. They have an awesome beer selection and all drinks are almost always very affordable, half-off happy hour or not.

There are three distinct seating areas here--two outdoor patios, one dark pub-like room at the front, and a bright, airy extension in back with skylights and a cathedral ceiling. This is where my sister and I were seated on our visit yesterday, and it made all the difference. On a pleasant summer day, I wouldn't have wanted to be confined to the dungeonesque front room; save that for a cozy winter afternoon. The food here was so-so. We enjoyed some fried calamari before having the grilled tuna salad and the Thai chicken salad. Mine was a bit bland but fresh and light and just what I wanted on a warm day. I had several interesting beers, thanks to their sampler (three 5-ounce glasses for $4.95). My favorite was a smooth, light ale called Magic Monkey, which is brewed exclusively for the Deli. Our server Vincent was great. There was a mistake by the kitchen, and the bar did not have two of the beers that I wanted, and both times he informed us immediately and was very apologetic. He checked up on us constantly and was always very pleasant. For me to notice good service means that it was REALLY good; usually I expect it and therefore take it for granted. So they are doing something right here. Keep it up. My sister loves this place, and they do seem to have a quite a large menu, so next time that I am visiting, we will probably find ourselves back here.

Food wise, I usually always have a pretty good meal at the Deli. Got a burger the last time I was there, and it was cooked absolutely perfectly. I like my burgers medium-rare, and most places around here always tend to cook it more in the medium range. Not the case here. Our service has usually been pretty bad though. I remember one time when the waitress would literally not take away any of our old dishes. Whenever we got a refill, she gave us a new cup. But, she kept the old one at the table. By the end of the meal, we had a stack of about 8 cups just sitting in the middle of the table. Have never been there late at night to just drink, but I do know that they have a wide selection of beers to try.

We happened upon The Deli while looking for another establishment. We should have waited for the other place to open. The menu was promising. A variety of interesting choices, we were overwhelmed and decided on the gyros, lamb gyros. They looked good when they came but the yogurt (sour cream) sauce was served on the side and after taking the first bite it was obvious that either the kitchen didn't know beef from lamb or they thought we wouldn't. The service was OK, there was a server in training, her trainer should have let her do her training. The dining room was nice and the drinks looked promising, I did not indulge. Perhaps The Deli needs to live up to the reputation.

A tale of two restaurants... it was the best of food it was the worst of food. I should have known better than ordering Seafood Fra Diavlo at a place called "The Deli", but I was trying to be sort of healthy and stay away from burgers and giant sandwiches. I'll keep this review brief. I gave three stars for the incredible beer selection and because my guest's sandwiches and turkey burger were great. But whatever you do don't order the "fine dining" stuff it is way overpriced and barely adequate. Service was sorely lacking as well... but I think we just got a new girl. By all means give it a try but stick to the Bitter Ale and the Pittsburgh style sandwiches!!

More like 4.5 Stars The Deli was my favorite bar in State College. It was never super crowded at night, and it had an air of sophistication that was hard to find in many of the other bars. The best part was that it had a rotating extensive selection of microbrews, so it was easy to try lots of new, amazing beers. Every day for two hours (I think 9 - 11 during the week and 10 - 12 on weekends), everything was half off. This is the main reason my friends and I started going here, but the environment and the good beer selection kept us coming back. Besides a couple random incidents like one of my friends not being informed beforehand that his beer wouldn't be half off, I've only had good experiences at The Deli. I suppose I can't comment too much on the food as I've only eaten there once or twice, but I'd definitely recommend stopping by. It's a great place--especially if you like good beer.

$3 for a full pound of wings every night, during happy hour !!! And drink specials throughout the week. Happy hour is Sunday thru Wednesday (9p to 11p) & Thursday thru Saturday (10p-12a) The wings are some of the best in town (at least 4 out of the five times we ordered them)

Former grad and the Deli is normally our first stop when we are back for a visit. The food is quite good but the dishwasher leaves a lot to be desired. Brew City fries are fab but it's the dipping mayo/sauce that makes the dish. Hubby and I are quite partial to the cajun version. He loves the Meshuganna sammich and I'm a fan of the Chicken Buffalo cheesesteak. The menu is huge and has something for everyone. Outdoor seating is limited and the view of the parking lot leaves a lot to be desired but I wouldn't change a thing. Service is always friendly and the bloody mary's are excellent.

Compared to the other reviewers, I have a slightly different perspective of this restaurant: I dated an employee here and was able to see the behind the scenes at this crappy little place. While there wasn't anything disgusting to report (the service areas and kitchen are all relatively clean and up to code) there are numerous other areas that don't quite live up to my expectations (which I assure you are low). For instance: The average waitstaff length-of-employment here is less than three months... since most are students who have no reason to stay when treated the way they are there, most leave. Now, I know this sounds like something that shouldn't factor into a review, so stay with me: the ones that stay are usually too stupid/incompetent to work anywhere else. As a result, expect to wait forever for a table (the hostesses have perpetual blond-moments), forever for service (the servers spend more time in the service station talking to each other then they do table-side), and forever for a drink (the bartender actually had to go to a table to ask what goes in a vodka martini...). If you don't mind waiting on the service, the food... well... at least the food is fast. DON'T ORDER THE CHICKEN QUESADILLA . Over half of the orders get sent back because bones were found in the middle of the dish. One person broke a tooth. Otherwise, the menu is average but offers enough choices for everyone. This is the only reason it got two stars. So, if the parents are in town and you want to please everyone or if you are a little liquored up and drunk enough to ignore the wait, go ahead and have dinner at The Deli. Just don't say I didn't warn you.

The menu is deceiving with tasty-sounding options that are poorly executed. This alone wouldn't deter me but in the three times I have visited the service has been unbearable with slow and lazy servers who actually seem annoyed to be asked for refills. Do not go if you are not over the age of 40 or have a family because they will assume they can slack on professionalism.

I will admit, I've only been here once, and it was for Jazz brunch on sunday. Everyone's food was wonderful, and the jazz music was great. We were in a little bit of a hurry and it was really busy, but our waitress was really nice and helpful. Apparently our group usually likes to have one waiter because he's so glum and morbid, and they were sad we didn't have him. The decor is really cool, though pretty odd. I definitely wouldn't know what to to with a bronze caste of a hippo head! Drinks didn't look too expensive, good specials. Down one star because the bathroom hadn't been cleaned since State Patty's day the night before.

Don't come here if you're already starving...although you'll get plenty to eat (the portion sizes are quite generous), you'll have to wait a VERY long time to get your food! Huge menu, decent food. Great place to come if you're looking for a lot of choices, a casual setting, and have plenty of time.

I would really like to give them a better review, and I'm hoping I'll be able to soon. They remodeled the place, or at least the backroom, to look like a hip lounge over the summer, and it looks great! But while they've made some changes to the menu, it doesn't live up to the new vibe they're going for. The food is ok, overpriced for what you get, although the desserts are great. I was more impressed with their Sunday brunch menu, the stuffed brioche french toast with blueberries was amazing! But my friend ordered the belgian waffle and it was small and slightly burnt. The biggest problem I have with them is that they advertise their large selection of beers, and they have a huge menu of craft and specialty beers. However on a recent visit, my friend asked for 5 different beers before he found one they actually had, and this isn't the first time this has happened. Don't inflate your beer menu with beers you no longer carry!

The food is very good but the beers are something to behold. Only Xenos rivals the Deli in terms of truly high-end brews. Go for the 9pm happy hour (does a 9pm half price drink special really count as happy hour?). This place is packed most nights after 7 pm even though most of the drinks are pricey. They have "festivals" at different times of the year and are generally excellent. The soup festival in the late winter was definitely worth the trip for a hearthy lunch.

Unless something has changed since I was last there, the Deli has the worst service of anywhere I've ever been in State College, which is in part due to awful management and high turnover rate. I went to the Deli for two years straight once a week at the same time with a group of friends (a night when they were not typically busy), and at the end of that two years we decided to move to another location because they still had no idea who we were and took 45 minutes several times to even take our order. The alcohol specials are ok, food decent, but definitely overpriced and not worth the time you'll wait for it.

This is the one restaurant we return to again and again. The menu is expansive and has sandwiches, unique pastas, meats, duck!, salads and soups. Just the list of coffee beverages could tide you over for a year! My favorite was always the mashed potato soup, so good! They make an awesome salad. And this was the first place I ever had chai tea and I am still in love. It came in a large bowl of a cup and so creamy I could eat it with a spoon. The menu isn't all that cheap but the portions are generous, the decor is lovely, and the booths near the bar offer a nice private dining experience. Waitstaff is helpful and friendly. And be sure to check out the long long list of desserts, I can still taste the white chocolate raspberry mouse. yum!!

I've been a frequent customer at Deli for years and my number one complaint about the place is the slow service and the time it takes for you to get your order. Food is decent but not particularly memorable. Some times can be hit or miss. Other than that, I've always enjoyed my experience here and it's a nice go-to in the downtown area with friends. They have a great selection of drinks. I also like their decor.

For some reason, I continue to give the Deli a try but usually come out disappointed. At this point, I will not go back to the Deli. I called ahead to see if I could sit outside with my dog and they said it was fine and that there was no wait. When I arrived 10 minutes later, I was told that I would have to wait, but we should be seated shortly. I told them to give me a call when a table was ready. We ended up going elsewhere and I am glad that we did because I didn't get a phone call until about 30 minutes later. Later in the week, we had a reservation for about 10 people at the Deli for lunch. We had to wait in the lobby for over an hour. When we were seated the wait staff did not say anything to us about the wait. I spoke up and asked for complimentary appetizers which we were given. Appetizers were fine and the food was okay. I ordered the mushroom ravioli and was very surprised to find that it was just mushrooms in pasta wrapper - not what I expected and not very good. The service itself was slow and the orders were not entirely correct. At the end, there was a slight slip up from our somewhat flustered waiter. The manager came over and asked me if the waiter told me that he forgot to put in my order and that is why it was late (2 minutes after the other food came). I told her yes and she said something like "good, I told him to because it was his fault." I understand that the service was not spectacular but I felt that was demeaning. Then due to his slip, he spilled some dressing on someone, she said that she was taking off the added tip for a big party and stated that we were free to tip whatever we felt he actually deserved. Yes the entire experience was flawed but to put a college kid down like in the way that she did was not professional in my opinion.

Three different sandwiches ordered between three different people...and each one of them was delicious. Awesome beer menu. The Deli is tucked away in downtown State College, down one of the small streets off of College Avenue. The decor is simple, a lot of warm tones in the furniture and walls, with a touch of color in the cone-like ceiling lamps. Cute. We were handed the menu, and I saw grilled cheese- mind made up. My mom, on the other hand, took forever, and finally asked the waiter which of two sandwiches he preferred, and was suggested to order the Italian. It was served on a focaccia bread and had fried egg, capicola, potatoes, provolone cheese, roasted red peppers, and a pesto aioli. It looked simply amazing... and huge- and that's saying something from coming from a vegetarian. It came with a small field green salad with a vinagrette, which my mom let me taste, and it was the perfect accompaniment for such a heavy sandwich- super light and sweet. To make things brief- she loved it, and made two meals out of it. Now my grilled cheese on the other hand... no where near perfection. It was just a plain sandwich- white bread and white american cheese. The sandwich, which cost $7, was the size of my hand. Granted it was a triple decker sandwich, it lacked the deliciousness and meltiness that the grilled cheese normally boasts. I could've made a better sandwich in my microwave, sadly. The menu is pretty extensive, and there really is something for everyone. Overall it was a decent eat. It is the perfect place to go if you have several patrons with varying dining interests, and if you are looking for a more relaxed atmosphere.

The Deli could be, should be an awesome place to grab lunch or dinner, or even brunch on Sunday. If only it would be. Somehow, though, every time I give it another shot it lets me down. As many people have noticed the waitstaff here leave much to be desired. The menu makes all the food sounds really good, and in theory the combinations are delicious, but not so in practice. The dishes are always just a little too bland and lacking flavor. I don't know why. We went for brunch on Sunday and I got the morning star (potatoes - crispy, yay! +1 point - eggs, veggies, etc) which was good..but...something was missing. I remember having a similar feeling when I ordered the portabella and feta sandwich (and feta is usually pretty flavorful). Brunch does come with a side salad that was lightly dressed, just the way I like it. No complaints there. However their espresso machine was broken, and I was denied my caffeinated beverage. I'm sure I'll be back, as it definitely isn't the worst State College has to offer.

I know, it's a college town. But why do they think they have my number whenever I visit? The Deli is a local legend. I understand the owner owns several bars and restaurants on this block. After a 30 minute wait (on a Saturday afternoon with nothing going on in State College), our party of eight was seated in the atrium portion of the joint. Matt the server was very nice. Food on the menu looked really tempting, but then it came. My turkey burger was dull and lifeless on a semi-stale roll. My biggest beef on all of the dishes we ordered was the size of the french fry order. How much could fries cost? When my burger comes and it's accompanied by about 12 (I counted them) sweet potato fries (which were actually very good), I feel cheated. Next time I'll pass on The Deli.

How have I never reviewed this place?????? They probably have something for everyone. The menu is enormous. Literally...apps, salads, sandwiches, Italian, Mediterranean, Seafood, Pasta, Steaks, Ribs, etc.... I always get a salad here. It's always good. They ascribe to that stupid State College rule of "if everyone at the table isn't 21, the person drinking can't sit at the table" Uh.....

The food here is pretty decent but the service is TERRIBLE. Expect to wait 45+ minutes for your food and to have minimal interaction with your server (based on multiple visits). The food is pretty good. They have a large menu and offer a few Jewish dishes which are pretty tasty. Overall, the place isn't bad to try, but it's definitely not a place I would frequent on a regular basis.

This overtook Zeno's as my favorite bar, they have most of the selection and you can actually move around without bumping into 10 people.

Ah the Deli. Hands down the best family bar and restaurant in State College. Their chefs do a pretty good job whipping together meals, however, nothing that will blow your socks off. Seating is adequate on the inside, and there is a dark feel to this place. Service is acceptable and prices run average.

  • James A.

And be sure to check out the long long list of desserts, I can still taste the white chocolate raspberry mouse. yum!!
